Sokonoi Tented Camp

" I have just returned from a safari with Game Drivers ( on honeymoon). It was first rate, very personal & very friendly. Nigel, who's company it is, will also be your guide, he's a top guy and knows everything about everything you'll see or do. The camp set up is great and you'll really feel like you are out there in the middle of the wilderness - because you are. Very highly recommended." Former Client comment from Trip Advisor

The Game Drivers Sokonoi Camp is located on the Oropile Lugga (a seasonal river flowing out of the nearby Loita Hills) in the Maasai Mara. The camp provides a rare opportunity to experience a real bush safari camp. Click here for rates.

Our tents are very comfortable, spacious and along with double or twin beds each has its own verandah, full bathroom facilities (including flushing lavatories) and changing areas. The tents are carefully sited to ensure seclusion and that feeling that only comes from a real camp in real bush. Outside of your tent you have your own campfire. Although the camp is not fenced, it is patrolled at night by Maasai Askaris (watchmen) and the campfires and lights are kept burning from dusk to dawn.

Off the beaten-track Sokonoi Camp provides an exclusive base for day and night game viewing and a chance to meet the local Maasai.

Helping the Maasai Community help themselves: The Camp is located on Maasai land that is part of the Siana Wildlife Conservancy. All proceeds from concession and camp fees are used to help the local Maasai communities thereby giving them a valuable stake in Maasai Mara tourism.

Visits to the manyatta (Maasai village), bush walks with our Maasai hosts, the opportunity to purchase handmade crafts and be present at an authentic tribal dance are all part of the camp experience.

Maasai Mara experiences

Our camp chef is adept at preparing a wide variety of international cuisine, much of which is cooked in our 'bush oven' where bread is also baked daily. We place particular importance on providing fresh produce and tropical fruit. Other refreshments are available throughout the day. We are also used to catering to those with special dietary requirements.

Maasai Mara Facts and Info:

  • The Maasai Mara means "spotted land" in the Maa language and occupies over 1500 sq km of south western Kenya and forms the northern extension of the vast Serengeti ecosystem. It is an area that has been shaped by man and beast for countless generations and is, today, one the greatest and best known game reserves in the the world, renowned for its dramatic African vistas, an abundance of wildlife and a chance to see the 'Big Five': lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

  • The Mara is not just about wildlife and amazing views. This area is home to the Maasai people who have had a long coexistence with this land. Visiting the Mara with Game Drivers Safaris, especially if you stay at Sokonoi Camp, will allow you to see the Maasai way of life at first hand. An existence that has remained largely untouched for generations.
  • The Migration is now officially listed as one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. The food provided by the vast grasslands of the Maasai Mara encourage 1.5 million animals to move north from the Serengeti into the Mara each year. The Migration normally starts around mid July and lasts until the animals head back south toward the end of October. For many the highlight of the migration is the famed crossing of the Mara River where the herds not only have to contend with treacherous waters but also crocodiles and angry hippos. To witness this site is a very special experience indeed.
